Frequently Asked Questions

Polystyrene is a synthetic plastic that—usually in the form of polystyrene—is used in a variety of applications. It is characterized by its low density, good insulating properties, and versatility. Polystyrene is used as insulation, packaging material, and in various consumer goods.

When recycling polystyrene, the material is first shredded in a cutting mill – a process also known as "grinding." The mostly foam-like structures are mechanically broken down into fine particles, which are then cleaned and processed. The resulting powder or granulate can then be used as a secondary raw material in new plastic products.

  • Efficient shredding: By using a cutting mill, polystyrene is processed into a homogeneous powder with a uniform particle size.
  • Volume reduction: The process significantly reduces the volume of the raw material, which simplifies transport and storage.
  • Increased recyclability: The fine material can be used again directly as a raw material after further processing steps in plastics processing.
