Sample cross for uniform, representative sampling

Sample crosses from LITech

For uniform, representative samples

A Sample cross from LITech is used for the homogeneous division and mixing of bulk or granular materials – especially in sample preparation for laboratory analysis. Only when the sub-sample accurately reflects the original material can meaningful results be achieved. Our sample cross divides smaller quantities of powder, granules, and bulk material samples.

Typical applications are:

  • Soil and rock analysis – to form representative subsamples for chemical or physical analyses.
  • Agriculture & Environmental Analysis – in soil, compost or fertilizer samples to determine nutrients or pollutants.
  • Industry & Raw Material Testing – for sand, gravel, ore, coal, cement or granules for quality control.
  • Food and feed analysis – to reduce larger quantities of material to testable samples.

Carrying out sampling with the sample cross:

  • Taking subsamples:
First, several individual samples are taken from different areas of the main sample in order to ensure the most uniform starting basis possible.
  • Cross-shaped arrangement:
The individual samples taken are spread out in the shape of a cross on a clean, smooth surface.
  • Mixing and rejuvenating:
The subsamples are then carefully combined in the center of the cross and thoroughly mixed. The subsequent tapering process creates a representative mixed sample that best reflects the entirety of the main sample.

Advantages of the sample cross:

The use of a sample cross ensures high representativeness and homogeneity of the sample, especially with inhomogeneous materials. This enables reliable and meaningful analysis results, as a uniform distribution of properties within the sample is ensured.

Frequently Asked Questions

A sample cross is used for the homogeneous division and mixing of bulk materials, powders, or granular materials. It ensures that the sample taken represents the entire sample as accurately as possible – a fundamental prerequisite for reliable laboratory analyses.

The use of a sample cross ensures a uniform distribution of the properties in the sample. This ensures representativeness and homogeneity, which is crucial for quality assurance according to LAGA PN 98.

First, several individual samples are taken from different areas of the total sample. These are arranged in a cross shape on a clean surface, mixed together, and tapered in the middle. This creates a representative mixed sample that is used for analysis.

Sample crosses are used in many industries – including:

  • Soil and rock analysis
  • Agriculture and environmental analysis
  • Industry and raw material testing (e.g. sand, cement, ore, granules)
  • Food and feed analysis

Before application, the LAGA PN 98 specifications regarding sample number and sample size must be considered. Determining the maximum grain size is particularly important, as this influences the required sample volume. Careful planning is crucial for a representative result.
