Ferroalloys are produced in solid blocks and ground into smaller grain sizes for use in steelmaking. Due to their extreme hardness—for example, ferrochrome, ferromanganese, or ferronickel —wear-resistant grinding media are used. In the laboratory, mortars, sample mills, and ball mills employ multi-stage processes (impact mill, fine grinding < 100 µm). At the pilot plant level, combined systems (jaw crushers, roller crushers, impact mills) automate batches of up to tons to achieve final particle sizes of 1–50 µm. For extremely hard alloys—such as ferrotitanium or ferrozirconium —special ceramic or carbide materials are often used as grinding media to minimize wear.
