Operating principle of jaw crushers

Jaw crushers operate according to a simple principle: The material enters a funnel-shaped chamber defined by a fixed and a movable jaw. The latter, driven by an eccentric, periodically alternates between opening and closing phases. During the closing phase, the material is crushed primarily through pressure, impact, and friction forces. Thanks to the adjustable crushing gap, they achieve reproducible results.

A jaw crusher is a machine that crushes rock and other hard materials using pressure. The feed material is fed into a wedge-shaped space between a fixed jaw and a movable jaw driven by an eccentric shaft. The elliptical motion of the movable jaw creates pressure that crushes the material and forces it downward toward a narrowing gap, thereby determining the final particle size. Jaw crushers are ideal for coarse and pre-crushing materials such as rock, ores, glass, or construction materials.

  1. Supply: The material falls through a funnel into the wedge-shaped crushing chamber.
  2. Pressure crushing: The crushing jaws exert pressure on the material and crush it.
  3. Movement and reduction: The elliptical movement of the movable crushing jaw transports the material downwards and at the same time crushes it more and more finely through the narrowing gap.
  4. Discharge: The finished material falls out of the crusher as soon as it is smaller than the set gap.
